There’s nowhere like Portobello. William Wallace, Bonnie Prince Charlie, Mary, Queen of Scots and Sean Connery (James Bond) all have stories tied to these streets. There are mysterious 200-year-old pillars that still defy explanation; an island that hosted a bizarre experiment that would be illegal today; and industries, attractions and landmarks that once drew crowds but have since vanished from sight.
The first British entertainer to sell a million records also called Portobello home, earning admirers as varied as Winston Churchill and Charlie Chaplin.

Safety information
A safe route. Mostly along the promenade, but sometimes with roads to cross (normally quiet roads or pedestrian crossings.) Just watch out for cyclists on the prom and maybe some excitable, friendly dogs!Accessibility
Mostly flat paved surfaces so accessible for buggies and wheelchairs, although (for the best views) the trail starting point is on grass. But this is not essential, you can stay on the pavement.
Starting point
Trail starts 300 metres from the Joppa end of the promenade, beside a beach locals call "Secret Beach." Stand overlooking the sea, with Portobello beach on your left and the first site will be on your right.
